The striped tone-on-tone painting technique is one of the simplest ways to achieve a designer look to any room.

Steps to Shadow Striping

1. Paint wall with flat latex and let it dry for 24 hours
2. Mask trim and ceiling edge with masking tape
3. Mark wall with chalk – make sure the lines are vertical by using a level
4. Apply painters’ tape on the wall – align the tape with the marks and erase marks once tape is in place
5. Paint strips between the tape using high-gloss latex paint – use a brush or a roller
6. Remove tape before latex is dry to prevent its bonding to the wall

Remarks

• The width of the stripes can be uneven – you can use any pattern you like
• A darker base will typically create more contrast
• The wider the tape the faster you can do something else like watching your favorite show
• Shadow striping is great on hallways and long walls
