How to hide a scratch in wood furniture

Here is how you can temporarily hide the scratch, if you noticed a last moment scratch before the arrival of your guests for tea or coffee. Rub the meat of a walnut pecan or a Brazil nut along the scratch until the scratch is completely filled. The nut oil will darken and hide the scratch.

How to repair a scratch in wood furniture

For shallow scratches here is the most effective method to make them disappear

  • wax the surface with hard paste wax and a number 0000 steel wool
  • stroke lightly along the grain of the wood to avoid destroying the surface
  • buff the surface with a soft cloth as soon as the wax is level with the surface of the wood

For deeper scratches using a wax stick proves to be the most effective method to make them disappear

  • buy the color matched wax stick from your preferred hardware store
  • rub the wax stick into the scratch with even and firm strokes until the scratch is completely filled
  • remove any excess wax with the edge of a plastic putty knife or an old driver’s license card
  • let the wax to dry and buff the surface to a smooth finish

How to repair dings (tiny chips) in wood furniture

  • carefully remove any loose finish in or around the ding using a sharp craft knife
  • scrap with the sharp edge of the knife blade making sure not to scratch the damage spot
  • feather the edges of the ding with number 0000 steel wool
  • clean the ding will with a soft cloth lightly moistened in mineral spirits and let dry
  • apply the original finish (lacquer, varnish, shellac, etc) of the furniture with an artists’ brush and let the spot dry

How to repair dents in wood furniture

Here are the usual things one can do about a dent in wood furniture:

  • small and shallow dents in soft woods can be easily repaired by swelling the wood to raise the dent
  • large and deep dents, especially in hard wood, are more difficult to repair by using the same wood swelling method
  • very large, shallow dents are best left untreated as most of the time they will be unnoticed
  • deep dents should be filled with wood putty, wood filler or shellac sticks

Here is how to repair shallow and deep dents in soft or hard wood furniture

  • for finished surfaces, remove the finish for about 1/2 inch around the damaged area using fine-grit sandpaper
  • apply a few drops of water into the dent and let it penetrate the wood for about a day
  • if the dent does not swell, drive a series of small holes in the dent with a fine pin or needle and apply few water drops again into the dent
  • for very stubborn dents, place a thick damp cloth over the dent and press the cloth firmly with a warm iron
  • if this still does not raise the dent, apply a commercial wood-swelling liquid into the dent following manufacturer’s instruction
  • let the wood dry for about a week once the dent has been raised
  • clean the spot will with a soft cloth lightly moistened in mineral spirits and let dry
  • apply the original finish (lacquer, varnish, shellac, etc) of the furniture with an artists’ brush and let the spot dry
  • lightly buff the surface with steel wool
  • wax and polish the entire surface for a consistent look
