Types of Linear Fluorescent Light Bulbs
Here are the standard types of linear fluorescent lights
The letter T designates that the bulb is tubular in shape. The number expresses the diameter of the bulb in 1/8 of an inch.
Pentron T5 Fluorescent
Very small linear type of fluorescent that are used in many applications including direct and indirect lighting. Pentron T5s are only 5/8 of an inch in diameter and have two pins on each end.
Slimline Instant Start, T12 Single Pin
Feature instant start and a tube of 12 x 1/8″ in diameter. Typically used in industrial settings and spaces with low ceilings – ideal for workshops, home gyms and ambiental lighting.

Preheat Rapid Start, U shape T8
U shape T8 flourescent light bulbs use low-pressure gas discharge and can be sucessfully used to provide home ambient lighting.

U shape T12 flourescent light bulbs feature a thicker flourescent tube than the U shape T8 type and use the same low-pressure gas discharge to produce light.
Circline 4 Pin T9
Yes, Circline 4 Pin T9 type light bulbs are considered to be linear … albeit not a very straight one. These light bulbs are designed to be used in more compact, decorative fixtures and feature the same energy efficiency, color rendering properties and life expectancy as any standard flourescent light bulb.
Blacklight Flourescent Light
Blacklight lamps emit at 368 nm and are typically used in insect traps and inspection applications. They can also be used as ambient lights.
